Greenhouse planning
Lay out the plants, benches, and walking room before comparing kit dimensions.
By Bruce Goode
A kit's outside dimensions tell you how much yard it occupies. A sketch of the inside tells you whether you can use it comfortably. Begin with the work you want the greenhouse to do, then check the space that work will take.
Write down the plants and containers you expect to have inside at the same time. Seed trays that fit neatly in early spring may share the space with larger pots a few weeks later. Keep your first-season list realistic, and make a separate list of ideas you might try later.
Sketch the door, benches, and a clear route through the greenhouse. Side benches need to be shallow enough to reach across comfortably. Add any potting area, watering equipment, or storage you intend to keep inside. Check the kit's interior dimensions and sidewall height, since floor area alone does not describe usable growing space.
Try a simple layout outdoors with string, cardboard, or a garden hose. Carry a tray through the doorway position. Turn around where the benches would be. If you use a mobility aid or garden cart, include its real turning space and clearance in the test.
For a planning example, two benches measuring 2 by 8 feet provide 32 square feet of bench surface. They do not provide the full floor area of an 8 by 10 greenhouse. The remainder must accommodate access, equipment, and other uses. This is a sketching exercise, not a recommended kit layout or an accessibility specification.
Before moving up a size, compare the complete installation cost and the time required for care. If future expansion matters, ask whether that exact model can be extended and whether your site leaves room. The best shortlist is one you can explain: it fits the plants, the daily routine, the site, and the budget.
